AFS Essential Cinema: HISTORIAS MINIMAS (INTIMATE STORIES)

"Originally more accurately titled MINIMAL STORIES, Sorin's earlier film also explores the wasteland of Patagonia, this time through the lives of three different people, all individually making a journey down the same road toward the provincial capital of San Julian. Don Justo, a nearly blind, senile, guilt-ridden old man, is searching for his beloved dog, Badface, who had mysteriously run away three years earlier. Maria, a young mother, sets off for San Julian to participate in a game show, “Multicolored Casino"" in hopes of winning a prize, any prize, even a useless one. Traveling salesman Roberto peddling Swedish “slimming plasters"" takes a “soccer-ball cake"" to give to the child of a client he is hoping to court. These ""little"" stories, flirting with redemption, material gain, and love, succeed in telling us much about the human spirit in materially reduced situations."

Big Night Feast

"Every year, Edible Austin sponsors 'EAT LOCAL WEEK' to raise money for Urban Roots Youth Development Program, and this year, the Alamo Drafthouse is offering up an incredible food and film event to help the cause! Alamo chefs John Bullington and Trish Eichelberger have prepared an equisite Italian menu inspired by the climax of Campbell Scott and Stanley Tucci's Sundance-winning foodie film BIG NIGHT. And their culinary masterpiece will be yours too! Prepared from only the finest local ingredients and served in step with the film, John and Trish have created the quintesential Alamo Feast for lovers of great food and great film alike. A treat for all your senses.
AFS Essential Cinema: HERMANAS (SISTERS)

"Two sisters are reunited in Texas after their eight-year exile from Argentina. Natalia has become a journalist living in Spain and Elena has settled into a suburban life with husband and child. The discovery of an unpublished novel written by their father opens up many old wounds but also promises to help them understand the undertones of familial guilt covered up during the infamous military dictatorship of the 1970s. Moving fluidly back and forth between two decades, the director and her excellent actors show how those turbulent times affected all families, some dangerously so."

AFS Essential Cinema: LA CIENAGA (THE SWAMP)

"Everything trapped in a swamp eventually rots. Families are no exception. Economically stagnating in what was once simply their rambling vacation home, Mecha and Gregorio and their four children pass time drinking, wishing, dreaming, or complaining their lives away. Languishing in bed or on the floor at odd hours of the day, no one seems to have the will power to get up and out of their economic doldrums. In contrast, Mecha's cousin Tali lives in a nearby town with her more enterprising husband and younger children, but when they come to visit Mecha, their orderly lives seem to head for the swamp, also. Somehow not as depressing as it might sound, Lucrecia Martel's debut film is a fascinating portrait of people falling down the class ladder."

Emmet Otter's Jugband Christmas

"Christmas is approaching in Frogtown Hollow, and Emmet Otter and his Ma hope to buy gifts for each other. Unfortunately, Emmet doesn't make enough from the odd jobs he does, and Ma doesn't make enough as a laundress. They decide to compete in the Frog Town Hollow Talent Contest in order to win money, but Ma will have to hock Emmet's tool chest to buy a costume, and Emmet will have to put a hole in Ma's washtub for his band! Kermit the Frog hosts this classic Muppet musical Christmas tale, based on the book by Russell and Lillian Hoban, with original songs from master tunesmith Paul Williams. With live jug combo 'The Rogue River String Band' playing before the film!"

A Christmas Story

"This Christmas, don't shoot your eye out before you have the chance to enjoy THE undisputed #1 classic holiday movie of the last 50 years! This movie is bursting with so much fractured family warmth and cockeyed cheer that you'll swear you're watching footage of your own childhood! Relive the icy pole tongue tragedy, the pink bunny suit, the green teeth of that no-good bully Farkus and the secret decoder ring¦and that's just the beginning. If there's ever been a perfect distillation of everything that's good (and not-so-good) about the holiday season, it was captured here and lives on eternally as one of the monumental chapters in Christmas entertainment history! “Ohhhhhhh fuuuuuuudggge!"""
