Swimmer by Bill Lundberg

The Blanton Museum of Art is pleased to announce that it will exhibit, for the first time since its acquisition, University of Texas at Austin professor and artist Bill Lundberg's film installation, Swimmer. The piece was created in 1975 and is one of the earliest examples of conceptual film works. The Blanton's presentation offers viewers a rare opportunity to experience this important work by a forefather of film and video installation, and I hope that you will consider covering it. It will be on view in the museum's modern and contemporary galleries from May 2 – August 20, 2009. It will make its debut during the May B scene on Friday, May 1.

Similar to Teresita Fernandez' Stacked Waters, Bill Lundberg's Swimmer creates the illusion of a water–based environment within the museum's walls. The sounds of splashing water fill the darkened gallery and the image of a man treading water is cast onto the floor. The horizontal projection brings the illusion of film into the realm of reality, confronting the vertical viewer. Placing emphasis on image rather than dialogue or explanatory text–a practice typical in Lundberg's work–he artist sets up an open space for viewers to construct narratives about the swimmer based on their own interpretations and experiences.

Art critic Guy Brett wrote of this installation, “Projected onto the floor in the vicinity of wall-'hung paintings in a museum, Swimmer (1975) creates, with great wit and economy of means, a confrontation between two spaces, art gallery and swimming pool; two media, water and film; and two orientations, the vertical (the viewer) and the horizontal (the swimmer). So elemental are these confrontations that one cannot easily decide if the swimmer in his rectangle of water is a metaphor or freedom or entrapment.”

Lundberg created this seminal work while living in London in the early 1970s, filming it from scaffolding built over a resident–based works that explored social interactions and misunderstandings between people. A painter by training, Lundberg is considered a forefather of film and video installation, and is a professor here at The University of Texas at Austin and founder of the university's Transmedia program.

Stacked Waters by Teresita Fernandez

The Blanton Museum of Art is pleased to announce a major acquisition to its collection of American and contemporary art. Commissioned by the Blanton, renowned artist Teresita Fernández has transformed the museum's Rapoport Atrium with her installation titled Stacked Waters. The two–story, site specific work was generously underwritten by Jeanne and Michael Klein of Austin, and purchased in conjunction with The 2009 Blanton Museum Gala, Essence of Cool: Honoring Jack Blanton, Sr., held on January 31.

Stacked Waters consists of 3,100 square feet of custom–cast acrylic that covers the cavernous atrium walls in a striped blue pattern resembling water. Horizontal bands of saturated color shift and fade from deep blue to white in varying gradations. The title of the work is a nod to Donald Judd's stacked pieces, and his exploration of box interiors. (The Blanton atrium functions similarly, suggesting a container.) Utilizing the natural light afforded by the space's many skylights, the work will appear as a mirror, reflecting the activity of museum visitors and becoming what the artist refers to as, “a changing portrait of Texas light…”

Fernández has emerged as a major player in the contemporary art scene, with an impressive history of national and international exhibitions and awards. The addition of this new work affirms the Blanton's commitment to assembling a world–class collection of contemporary works by internationally recognized artists.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Teresita Fernández

A recipient of the coveted MacArthur Foundation Fellowship in 2005, Fernández is one of the most accomplished artists of her generation and is known for her evocative large–scale sculptures and immersive installations that address space, light and perception. She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY and is represented by Lehmann Maupin Gallery. Recent commissions include Seattle Cloud Cover for the Olympic Sculpture Park at the Seattle Art Museum, a work for the Public Art Fund in 2001 and a special project at The Museum of Modern Art in New York in 2000. She has had solo exhibitions at many prestigious institutions including the Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia; SITE Santa Fe in New Mexico; the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia; the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C.; the Castello di Rivoli in Turin, Italy; and most recently, at the Centro de Arte Contemporaneo de Malaga in Spain.

Jerry Bywaters: Lone Star Printmaker

Jerry Bywaters: Lone Star Printmaker

July 18 – November 8, 2009

The Blanton Museum of Art at the University of Texas at Austin presents an exhibition of one of Texas' most loved and celebrated artists, Jerry Bywaters (1906 – 1989). Organized by the Meadows Museum of Southern Methodist University, Jerry Bywaters: Lone Star Printmaker features 39 prints from 1935 to 1948, source photographs and select archival materials that illuminate the artist's process. Included are Bywaters famous renderings of the American Southwest, West Texas landscapes and architecture, and depression-era scenes from daily life.

Many visitors to the Blanton have come to know Bywaters through his famous 1940 painting, Oilfield Girls, from the museum's permanent collection. Indeed, this “regionalist master” began his career as a painter, studying at Southern Methodist University and later at the acclaimed Art Students League in New York City and the Old Lyme Art Colony in Connecticut. A member of the Dallas Nine, a group of young painters from the 1930s that helped establish a regionalist artistic identity and recognition for Texas art, Bywaters was often compared to Grant Wood and Thomas Hart Benton.

Beginning in 1935 Bywaters developed an interest in printmaking — a medium that allowed him to inexpensively produce multiple copies of his work and to circulate his regionalist aesthetic to a wider audience. From 1935 – 1948, the artist created over 39 prints, and in 1938, became a founding member of the printmaker's organization, the Lone Star Printmakers. His unique interpretations of landscapes, portraits, and architectural and urban scenes helped propel Texas artists into the national spotlight, securing them a prominent position in the development of printmaking in the 20th-century.

Bywaters became a pivotal figure in the emerging Dallas art scene, serving as a professor of Art and Art History at Southern Methodist University for over 40 years and director of the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts (now Dallas Museum of Art) from 1943 – 1964. A gifted writer, he was a frequent contributor to the Southwest Review, and art critic for the Dallas Morning News from 1933 – 1939. Bywaters' accomplishments have been recognized by the Dallas Art Association and the Texas Arts Alliance, among other prestigious organizations.

European Prints and Drawings: Posing in the Prints of Hendrick Goltzius and His Circle

European Prints and Drawings

Posing in the Prints of Hendrick Goltzius and His Circle
July 18, 2009 – November 15, 2009

In 1586 Hendrick Goltizus engraved the so-called Roman Heroes, a series of eight figures in the costume of ancient warriors. The figures were distinguished by their extravagant postures, their divorce from specific content, and their virtuoso technique. In turn, the series inspired a genre of extremely stylized variation upon established themes. Together they represent one of the last great expressions of Mannerism, the self-consciously stylish style that dominated European art in the second half of the sixteenth century. Along with the Roman Heroes, this exhibition presents four of the most important series by Goltzius and his immediate followers, each complete.

European Prints and Drawings: Correggio in Translation

Correggio in Translation
July 18, 2009 – November 15, 2009

Antonio Allegri, called Correggio after the small town of his birth, achieved a style of extraordinary sensory and sentimental appeal. Commissioned in 1522 and completed after 1530, his frescoes in the Cathedral of Parma are the most spectacular expression of this style. Only a century later would their overwhelming illusionism be fully appreciated and its lessons applied in the great ceilings of the High Baroque. In parallel response, Giovanni Battista Vanni created a series of fifteen, oversized etchings that reproduce Correggio's frescoes. At the same time, because of Vanni's fluency as a draftsman and subtlety as an etcher, these etchings possess their own spirited personality and allure. This exhibition presents the entire series for the first time.

Few genres of art express cultural climate more directly and clearly than satire. This exhibition focuses on the prints of James Gillray, one of the earliest and best-known British satirists. Adopting the battle cry Pro Bono Publico (“for the public good”), Gillray's prints informed, amused and shaped opinion at every level of society and are the direct ancestors of the modern political cartoon.

1890s: A Decade of Desire – A Decade of Dissent
March 21 – July 5, 2009 and July 18 – November 15, 2009

The effects of the advances made during the industrial and social revolutions culminated in the 1890s in both anticipation and apprehension of a new century. The first exhibition of this two–part series examines the triumph of consumerism expressed in the exuberant advertisements designed by Henri Toulouse–Lautrec, Alphonse Mucha and Jules Cheret. The backlash against this perceived materialism, as manifested in the work of symbolist artists, will be the focus of the second part of the series.

European Prints and Drawings: Prints and Drawings in the Time of Veronese

In conjunction with its showing of Paolo Veronese: The Petrobelli Altarpiece, the Blanton will display its finest Venetian prints and drawings of his time. Of immediate interest are a pastel study from the artist's workshop and Agostino Carracci's engravings after some of his most famous paintings. Powerful works by Paolo Farinati suggest the artistic situation in Veronese's native city, while a fine group of preparatory drawings by Palma Giovane suggests stylistic alternatives in Venice proper. Together, they expand and deepen the context of Veronese's great altarpiece.

Paolo Veronese: The Petrobelli Altarpiece - Reconstructing a Renaissance Masterpiece

The Blanton Museum of Art recently announced an important discovery regarding a work by Venetian master Paolo Veronese (1528 – 1588). Head of an Angel, a painting from the Blanton's Suida Manning collection, has been identified as a fragment of a long-lost Veronese masterpiece. Dr. Xavier Salomon, a Veronese expert and curator of the Dulwich Picture Gallery outside London, confirmed the fragment to be the head of Saint Michael, the central figure in the so-called Petrobelli altarpiece from 1565. Three other fragments from the altarpiece were previously identified in the collections of Dulwich, The National Gallery of Canada at Ottawa, and the National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh. These works, along with the Blanton's newly identified Saint Michael, will be reunited for the first time in more than two centuries. The reconstructed altarpiece will be exhibited alongside x-rays and other ephemera and will travel to the Blanton in October 2009.

Teresita Fernandez

Teresita Fernandez

November 1, 2009 – January 3, 2010

Contemporary American artist, Teresita Fernandez, is internationally acclaimed for her immersive, room-sized installations and evocative large-scale sculptures that address light, space and the perception of change. Using common materials such as steel, glass, and plastic, in subtle and precise ways, the sculptor transforms spaces into gorgeous environments that suggest, with great delicacy and refinement, the beauty and illusion of the natural world. This traveling exhibition will survey Fernandez' recent works, and will detail both her methods of process and execution. A special, new installation will precede the exhibition and will open in the Blanton atrium in January 2009.

Teresita Fernandez: Blind Landscape is organized by the University of South Florida Contemporary Art Museum, Tampa. The exhibition is curated by David Louis Norr, Chief Curator, USF Institute for Research in Art.

Major support for the exhibition at the Blanton is provided by Jeanne and Michael Klein and the Linda Pace Foundation. Funding is also provided by Lora Reynolds and Quincy Lee in honor of Jeanne and Michael Klein.

Workspace: Pablo Vargas Lugo

Pablo Vargas Lugo
November 14, 2009 – February 21, 2010

Pablo Vargas Lugo's WorkSpace project, Eclipses for Austin, explores solar eclipses as important collective rituals. Total eclipses of the sun provoke astonishment, anxiety, hope, joy, and fear and compel those who witness them to question their place in the world. For Vargas Lugo's WorkSpace project, 350 people will gather in the stands of UT 's Darrel K. Royal Texas Memorial Stadium and will stage ten solar eclipses that will occur in Texas over the course of the next 340 years. In a carefully choreographed performance, participants will hold up black and white signs in a choreographed simulation of each eclipse.
The Virgen de Guadalupe became a symbol of identity and empowerment for artists of the Chicano Art Movement. This exhibition puts a spin on traditional understandings of Marian iconography by examining images of the Virgen de Guadalupe in Chicano prints and posters spanning the late 1960s through the 1990s from the Gilberto Cardenas Collection of Latino Art, on long-term loan to the Blanton.

European Prints and Drawings: Goya's Prints:The Dawn of Modern Art

Goya's Prints: The Dawn of Modern Art

November 28, 2009 - March 7, 2010

Modern art is often said to begin not just with Goya's art, but with his prints in particular. The Blanton possesses some thirty impressions, representing each of the artist's major series in states and editions from the earliest to latest. They include several great rarities, like El Embozado, probably left unfinished at his death, and recent acquisitions, like a brilliant proof impression from his visionary series, Los Proverbios. This exhibition will unite these works for the first time, providing an opportunity both to appreciate his genius and to assess relative quality in his etchings.

Modern & Contemporary Prints and Drawings - The Sleep of Reason: Goya's Influence in Spanish America

The Sleep of Reason: Goya's Influence in Spanish America

November 28, 2009-March 7, 2010

The nineteenth-century Spanish artist Fracisco Goya, with his disquieting depictions of violence and corruption and his mastery of graphic techniques, inspired many twentieth-century artists of Spanish America. The stark style and unflinching approach to reality in Goya's prints provided a model for artists wishing to convey the darker aspects of modern life. Spanish American artists felt a sense of cultural affinity for Goya and drew from his example in depicting subjects such as warfare, madness, and alienation. This selection of drawings and prints from the Blanton's permanent collection features works by artists who were inspired by Goya, including José Luis Cuevas (Mexico), Ernesto Deira (Argentina), Armando Morales (Nicaragua), and Augusto Rendón (Colombia), among others. It complements the exhibition Goya: The Dawn of Modern Art, shown concurrently in the European print galleries.

Desire

Desire

February 5 – April 25, 2010

With a stellar roster of international contemporary artists working in all media, this thematic exhibition will explore the notion of desire and how artists have portrayed its related psychological states: longing, arousal, infatuation, despair, anger, whimsy, etc. Included are video works by Bill Viola, Isaac Julien and Amy Globus; paintings by Marilyn Minter, Georgann Deen and Gajin Fugita; photo–based works by Glenn Ligon, Miguel Angel Rojas and Olaf Breuning; sculpture by James Drake, Petah Coyne and Valeska Soares; drawings by Danica Phelps and Tracey Emin; and more. New works will be created specifically for the show by Adam Pendleton, Peter Saul, Robert Kushner, and Kirsten Hassenfeld, and an accompanying selection of historic prints drawn from the Blanton's holdings will exemplify the enduring nature of this theme. The exhibition will have an illustrated catalogue with texts on desire by a diverse group of writers, and will be accompanied by a full menu of interdisciplinary programs.

Desire is organized by the Blanton Museum of Art. Funding for the exhibition is provided, in part, by a grant from the Houston Endowment Inc. in honor of Melissa Jones for the presentation of contemporary art at the Blanton.

Matisse as Printmaker

Matisse as Printmaker

May 23 – August 1, 2010

Henri Matisse (1869–1954) may be best known as a painter and sculptor, but he himself placed no hierarchy on the mediums in which he worked. Each medium was exploited for its unique possibilities and became totally integrated with other formal and thematic concerns. Drawn from the extraordinary collection of Matisse prints that once belonged to the artist's son Pierre and is now part of the Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation, Matisse as Printmaker includes over 60 etchings, monotypes, aquatints, lithographs, linocuts in black and white, and two-color prints-examples of every printmaking medium that Matisse utilized.

The exhibition is organized by the American Federation of Arts and the Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation. The exhibition is curated by Jay McKean Fisher.
