Barbecue, bands, and cactus-themed bric-a-brac: If there’s a better way to celebrate Texas Independence Day, don’t tell the organizers at the Texas State Arts Festival, who once again bring together hundreds of artisans, vendors, and crafty types for a two-day celebration of the same independent Texas spirit that caused us to brush Mexico off our collective shoulders in the first place (while simultaneously stealing a good chunk of its food and culture). Enjoy historical recreations in the shadow of the Bob Bullock museum, take in music from diverse groups ranging from Latin funksters Grupo Fantasma to swirly art-poppers Future Clouds And Radar to dance-rockers The Black And White Years, or just struggle to keep your funnel cake down while watching The Great Gozleone swallow multiple swords. You know, just like in Sam Houston’s day. For a full list of performers, visit roadwayevents.com.
