Drew Gassett is living the American dream. After playing on the UT basketball team, a bench warmer, but fan favorite, Drew was looking for a second calling. In early 2008, he ventured on a road trip to travel around the United States on the quest for the perfect burgers, fries, and milkshakes. Finding inspiration all across the country, he opened a burger trailer behind Star Bar on the West Side and quickly (again) became an Austin favorite. Naming it after his favorite book, Lonesome Dove, Hat Creek Burger Company was born. A burger company devoted to providing local, whole food ingredients for the whole family.

Pacha is best-known for their legendarily delicious pancakes, but their whole menu is executed with the same tastiness. You really can't go wrong ordering anything here, but one other item (besides the aforementioned pancakes) sticks out. Pacha makes a fantastically delicious chili-cheese omelet. Yes, that's a spicy start to the day, and yes, you totally should do it.

Upper Crust Bakery makes their desserts from scratch every day ensuring that fresh quality taste. You can't talk coffee in Allandale and not give it up for Sorrento's. This venerable cafe is accessible by walk in or drive thru, and has earned a special place in the hearts of all who frequent it. Sure, it might look fairly unassuming from the outside, but the charm and warmth coming from the inside of Sorrento's are from more than just the coffee. This is a beloved part of the neighborhood that should be experienced early in the morning. If you get there early enough, there may even still be some Tacodeli tacos left to purchase.

Atown Strip Mall provides a space in Allandale for local designers that are interested in selling their unique work. Although folks come for the local handmade items, the biggest draw may just be the complimentary cookies and wine available to shoppers while they browse.

Though comparatively less flashy than say, Barton Creek Mall, Northcross Mall nonetheless possesses a fair amount of a small town charm that makes up for its inauspiciousness. Play It Again Sports has been a familiar spot for cheaper-end sporting equipment for a long time in Austin. Formerly known as Republic of Sandwich, Capitol Sandwich is every bit as delectable as its forefather. As you might have guessed, this place is a veritable mecca of all things sandwich related. They also have some of the best menu item names we've seen in quite awhile. Here's a sample of a few of them: Green Eggs & Ham, Boss Hog, and Jive Turkey. Mmmm, delicious and original.

Surprisingly enough, Jewboy Burgers is a Mexican Diner style burger served on an oversized potato roll a taste of the east coast and El Paso, Texas in one delicious burger.

With several locations in Austin, you can enjoy Lucy's Fried Chicken on South Congress, South Lamar, and at their Allandale spot. Lucy's has become an Austin institution dedicated to juicy, delicious fried chicken. They also have happy hour all day Monday through Wednesday and 11-7 Thursday and Friday. Who would've thought cracking open a cold one with the boys would involve fried chicken? We did.

Lala's started with the goal of prolonging Christmas into a year-round holiday and is now Austin's only bar that continues celebrating yuletide festivities long after the cold weather has disappeared. Filled with string lights, kitschy reindeer figurines, glowing Christmas trees, and an expansive beer draft, Lala's resembles a boozy revision of Santa's Workshop. It is, without a doubt, a must-visit destination in Allandale.
