The Best Veggie Burgers in Austin

Ah, the veggie burger.

For vegetarians and vegans alike, this menu item can be one of two things: a salivation-inducing saving grace, or if done poorly, the bane of their herbivorous existence. Fortunately, Austin’s options tend to veer toward the former, with palate-pleasing patties being served up all over the city.

The Burger: Kerbey Lane is another 24-hour dining destination hell-bent on helping you get your burger fix at any time. Their Hippie Burger is a classic veggie patty that can be upgraded with mozzarella, avocado or gluten-free bread—morning, noon or night. And the icing on the cake...er, sandwich? It's served with hand-cut sweet potato or French fries, making it pretty much the breakfast/lunch/dinner of champions.

The Burger: The Veggie Royale is a huge and hearty homemade patty sandwiched between thick slices of toasted ciabatta with veggies and your choice of sauce. (Go for the chipotle-pecan pesto—satisfaction guaranteed.) As for sides, while there are myriad options, we suggest looking no further than the crunchy, tangy Asian Slaw.

The Burger: The simply named Mr. Natural Burger consists of a homemade soy patty, lettuce, tomato, onion, sprouts, pickles, mustard, and mayo, on homemade organic whole-wheat bread. Slightly more expensive variations include the Burger Boss—for which avocado, Monterey Jack cheese and sautéed mushrooms and onions are added to the mix—and the Texas Burger, which ups the ante with barbecue sauce, jalapeño and veggie bacon.

The Burger: P. Terry's may be technically classified as a fast food joint, but it boasts a veggie burger that's on par with sit-down establishments—for about half the price. Their patty comes crowned with American Cheese, lettuce, tomato and, of course, special sauce. (We still don't know what exactly that entails.)

The Burger: The Bac’n Cheeze Burger (which is not only vegan, but features a burger patty that is soy- and gluten-free as well) consists of an unbelievably good house-made patty topped with seitan bac’n, melted cheeze (yes, with a “z”), vegan mayo, and the typical burger toppings. It makes for one hell of a dinner, and an equally good late-night cure for the drunchies. While beef-obsessed skeptics may scoff at that description, one bite is enough to convert any carnivore…at least for a day.

The Burger: In desperate need of a veggie burger at, um, any time? They've got your cravings covered at 24 Diner. Their homemade veggie patty is made from beets, mushrooms, lentils, rice, pumpkin seeds and golden flaxseeds, and is available in two variations: The Goat Cheese Veggie, which features arugula, roasted tomatoes and lemon vinaigrette with—as you probably guessed already—goat cheese, all served between slices of multigrain toast; and Betsy's Veggie, a fancy take involving Havarti, spicy pepper relish and avocado on a pain au lait bun.
