Barton Springs is often heralded as Austin’s “Crown Jewel” - a place where locals and tourists alike hang out, get a tan, occasionally howl at the moon and of course, jump into freezing cold water! Once you witness this stunning scenery in the heart of Austin, it’s impossible not to feel drawn to Barton’s crisp, clear spring-fed water. With so much allure surrounding this magical place, we decided to demystify Barton Springs Pool and explain what it’s all about.

The first thing you might ask yourself is ‘where did Barton Springs even come from?’ Well, the area’s namesake William Barton settled the area in 1838 in the nascent years of the Republic of Texas, and he touted the springs as a tourist destination before the city of Austin had even been founded. If you think that sounds like a long time ago, you might be surprised to hear that the springs had been in use for centuries by Native American tribes like the Tonkawa. The area containing the springs did not become recognizable as a pool until the early 1900s, when private owners recognized the mass appeal of Barton Springs, and installed sidewalks, a diving board, and the bathhouse.

With year-round temperatures ranging from 68 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit no matter the weather, it’s easy to see why so many flock to Barton Springs under the searing summer sun. And, every winter, Austinites participate in the polar plunge to ring in the new year. Though not everyone knows this, Barton Springs Pool is also open after sundown, and people even howl at the moon when it’s full each month. However you choose to do it and whether you live here or are just passing through, Barton Springs Pool is a must-see for everyone in town.

Barton Springs is currently open every day except Thursday 5am - 10pm, and open Thursday 5am-9am and 7pm-10pm. Normal rates apply ($5 for adult residents; see more here).

Here are some things to know before you go:

- Barton Springs Pool is family-friendly, but all people are allowed to go topless.

- No food, pets, glass, coolers, frisbees, footballs, alcohol or smoking.

- There are big crowds on summer weekends.

- Barton Springs Pool is free during the off-season, early mornings, and nights.

- The water is really cold (our advice: just jump straight in!)
