Spread & Co.

1601 W 38th St

3809 W 35th St

Chances are if you go to a restaurant that specializes in all things cheese, they are going to do a grilled cheese right, and that is definitely the case when it comes to Spread & Co. Their Monger's Grilled Cheese is made with three cheeses (selected by their cheese mongers), all melted in between two toasted and buttery slices of brioche. For an additional cost you can add salami or prosciutto to your grilled cheese, creating the perfect charcuterie-style sandwich.

Palo Seco

2400 Burleson Rd

Palo Seco, arguably the best spot in Austin for birria has combined two of our favorite things: grilled cheese and birria. Forget tomato soup, because this grilled cheese dipped in their special consome is going to be your new favorite pairing.

Rebel Cheese

2200 Aldrich St

Since we included a grilled cheese from a cheese shop, it's only fair we include one from a completely vegan cheese shop as well. Rebel Cheese is a 100% vegan deli, cheese, and wine shop in Mueller. Their take on a grilled cheese is made with their Rebel mozzarella and creamy cheddar on grilled rustic sourdough, with the option to add on (all vegan of course) ham, bacon, tomato, avocado, pickled jalapeños, or pesto. Add on a side of their house made tomato soup, topped with a drizzle of cashew cream.

Wholly Cow Burgers

3010 S Lamar Blvd A

Wholly Cow Burgers is known primarily as South Austin's premier location for organically-raised beef patties, hand-cut fries & farm-fresh produce. Besides that, they've also got a fantastic Grilled Cheese Sandwich, stacked to the brim with heaps of four different kinds of cheeses.

Black Star Co-op

7020 Easy Wind Dr

In addition to a menu that features cheese boards, fried chicken, ice cream, and other similarly delicious dishes, Black Star Co-op makes a particularly killer Grilled Cheese Sandwich. It consists of sharp cheddar, gruyere, and tomato on fresh baked Easy Tiger Pullman loaf. They also happen to be the world's first cooperatively-owned and worker self-managed brewpub, so you can grab a cold beer while you munch.

24 Diner

600 N Lamar Blvd

One of the things that make 24 Diner's Grilled Cheese special is that you can get it anywhere between 7am and 11pm. Got an 8:00 am hankering for a Grilled Cheese Sandwich? Not a problem. Just pop right in and order one. It doesn't hurt that they make them extra cheesy and delicious.

Burro Cheese Kitchen

75 Rainey St

This food truck specializes in artisan grilled cheese sandwiches. While they are all extremely delicious, we recommend trying the Croque-Madame made with sourdough, smoked ham, gouda cheese, pesto aioli, all topped with a fried egg and dulce de leche. Now that’s a sandwich.

Haymaker

2310 Manor Rd

This Manor neighborhood bar LOVES cheese. A whole section of their menu is dedicated to grilled cheese-type sandwiches. Their original grilled cheese sandwich is made with your choice of American, sharp cheddar, smoked provolone, or swiss cheese, which gets perfectly melted between toasted sourdough bread.

Bouldin Creek Cafe

1900 S 1st St

Bouldin Creek Cafe is hard to beat in general, but their Grilled Cheese Con Hierbas, in particular, is a grand slam. It’s filled with melted cheddar/jack cheese with your choice of fresh basil or cilantro on grilled sourdough bread, plus you can add tomato, red onion, spinach or jalapeños. (They also have a vegan option). Keep an eye out for when they have their lunch special, La Doña, a sourdough grilled cheese stuffed with cheddar-jack or vegan cheese, cilantro, red onion, vegan chorizo (pea protein) and a green taqueria style salsa and one sandwich side (pictured above).

Yellow Jacket Social Club

1704 E 5th St

You can stop by the Yellow Jacket any day of the week and see someone munching on their grilled cheese sandwich made with fontina, havarti and herbs on light sourdough and served with pickled jicama.

A part of the Northside Domain, Bakery Lorraine is a San Antonio export that's been named in Buzzfeed, USA Today and many other publications as a must eat. Perch outside in their French-inspired patio and munch on their fontina, gruyère, and goat cheese grilled cheese (and of course add bacon) with a side of roasted tomato soup.
