Guide to Moving in Austin

It's moving season in the Texas heat.

While we can only offer the basic advice about the heat (stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, you know the spiel), what we can offer is some solid advice about moving logistics in the city. From movers and truck rentals to cleaning services and junk removal, this is your Guide to Moving in Austin.

College Hunks Hauling Junk

The name is self-explanatory: literal college hunks will haul your junk away. And know what qualities those hunks possess? Well, they claim that they’re Honest, Uniformed, Nice, Knowledgeable, with impeccable Service. Whether that’s an actual move or a “junk pickup,” the hunks offer donation services, moving services, storage services, junk removal, and more. The company also prides itself on being 100% eco-friendly coupled with service that is 100% reliable. And because size matters in situations like these, their moving equipment is 10% bigger than the competition. Nice.

Two Men and a Truck

Two Men and a Truck originated with just that, and has grown exponentially! This company certainly has its quirks: their motto is to treat everyone as if they were your grandma, they’re specifically trained in how to properly move pianos and other out-of-the-ordinary items. They’re tagged as “movers who care,” and offer a large variety of moving and packing services.

JUNK AND BULK ITEM REMOVAL

It's finally time to ditch that couch your mom gave you in 2012.

Buy Nothing App

Your first step in your junk mission is to check your neighborhood Buy Nothing group. They say one man's trash is another man's treasure, no? Once you join the group that corresponds to your neighborhood, you can post all your big items and see if anybody wants it. You can specify that they must be able to pick up the items and badda-bing-badda-boom, you can have your junk taken off your hands and make somebody's day in the process. P.S. the Nextdoor app works great for this too!

Austin Residential Bulk Collections

The City of Austin has periodic dates where they go around the city and haul off any big junk you leave curbside. You can check for those dates on their website and read through their guidelines regarding what items they accept and how to prepare for pickup. If it's not bulk pickup time, please do not put junk out on the curb.

Duke's Junk Recycling

With two locations in Central and North Austin, Duke's is a great option for those with junk on their hands in a period where the city can't pick it up. They have options for both dropoff and pickup; so, if you've got a vehicle that can take the junk to them, you can save a bit of money. Prices vary depending on the type of junk (household waste, construction waste, mattresses, and more). Duke's even carefully sorts the junk and recycles as much as possible (an average 80%!)

Savers or Salvation Army

If your junk is just junk-to-you and may be salvageable for another, consider donating to a thrift store around town. Savers and Salvation Army both accept larger items like furniture and other household goods. Check with their donation departments on each website for more details and locations. Salvation Army even allows you to schedule a pickup appointment.

LoadUp

For all the huge stuff that you rip out of your home, schedule an appointment with LoadUp. They can remove large bulky items, like washers and dryers, mattresses and other heavy items you need to get rid of but can't seem to budge. Their pricing is upfront and based on your locations and items, and their online scheduling makes it super easy to book.

College Hunks

You've likely seen the College Hunks moving trucks around the city (we mentioned them above for moving options), but did you know they can haul junk, too? (What can't these hunks do?!) They're often even available for same-day and next-day appointments, making this an easy option for getting your clutter removed ASAP. After all, H.U.N.K.S. stands for honest, uniformed, nice, knowledgeable, service.

Junk King Austin

With a name like Junk King Austin, we feel certain that your junk will be in good hands. You can book online or call to set up an appointment for no-touch, no-contact junk removal. They'll take pretty much anything accept hazardous waste, so you can finally get that humongous, decaying bathtub out of your backyard (as long as it's not hazardous, that is).

ATX Junk-A-Haulics

Apparently these folks are addicted to junk, and hey, we're not mad about it. You can get a quote on their website and call to book an appointment to finally pass your trash onto somebody who will take much better care of it.
