Hippie Hollow

"Hey, Do512! What's (Blank)?!"

Do512 Explains is our editorial series in which we spell out what the deal is with certain longtime Austin traditions. Whether you're a newbie who moved here last week or a longtime resident who just never got around to experiencing whatever thing we're talking about, Do512 Explains will make things clear to you in a tidy summary.

HIPPIE HOLLOW

"Hippie Hollow... That's where people get into their birthday suits and swim, right?" Yes, that's a certainly accurate component to the story - but it's not quite the full monty. A landmark Austin hangout since the 1960s, Hippie Hollow has weathered the storms of change and remained an idyllic microcosm of the Free Love Generation. Indeed, the park is most notable for being the sole legally recognized clothing-optional public park in Texas, but its general air of goodwill and casualness is equally important.

Mutual respect for the history and time-honored vibe of Hippie Hollow is one of the things that has kept it relatively unchanged over the years. Visiting Hippie Hollow is a pretty different experience than other nature swimming spots in Austin, so it's important to follow some basic etiquette and rules. It's $8 to purchase a day pass for a single adult, $3 for seniors, and free for disabled veterans. Glass bottles are expressly forbidden at the park, as are persons under the age of 18 and pets. You'll just want to make sure you bring sunscreen, snacks, and whatever else you'd generally bring for a lazy day swimming outside (make sure any alcohol is out of sight). It is also recommended that you bring comfortable shoes, as some of the terrain is rocky. And for the love of Texas, CLEAN UP YOUR TRASH WHEN YOU LEAVE

No, you are not required to take all of your clothes off. Yes, you'll probably want to once you see that everyone else is. For more information on visiting Hippie Hollow, click here.
