Take a drive, buddy.
Didn't you hear that all of life's stresses and worries can be outrun by driving fast enough? Maybe not, but we'll take our chances on a brief reprieve. And with the fall foliage started to emerge around Austin, it's the perfect time to take to the open road, roll down your windows, and crank up your playlist or podcast of choice. Both in and out of the city are some of the prettiest drives in the state; here are some of our picks.

Located about 50 miles South of Austin, Devil’s Backbone is infamous for its sweeping views of the Balcones Fault and its haunted history. Legend has it that an entire Civil War battle took place on the limestone ridge and the soldiers’ spirits still linger to this day. But who could blame them for wanting to hang around our stunning hill country a little longer? Pack a picnic for the overlook, stop for a socially distanced drink at the Devil’s Backbone Tavern, or just pass through for an idyllic (and slightly spooky) weekend drive.

5100 N Capital of Texas Hwy
If you’re short on time but still want to catch a gorgeous sunset (or sunrise for the overachievers), this is the ride for you. Only 15 minutes from downtown, the 360 Bridge and Overlook has become an Austin staple. Sure, you may have already seen this view from your Instagram feed at least 100 times, but nothing beats the real thing. Put on your favorite album, roll your windows down, and take in the picturesque sight of Lake Austin and our shining skyline in the distance.

Fredericksburg, TX 78624
Recognized by the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department as one of Texas’ Great Wildlife Trails, the Peach Loop is a route that connects seven state parks surrounding the city of Fredericksburg (which is about 80 miles west of ATX). The parks showcase over 250 different species of wildflowers and 200 types of birds, perfect for sightseeing and a good ol’ Texas photo op. Plus, you’ll pass through acres of Fredericksburg’s best orchards and vineyards where you can pick up a souvenir for the ride home.

Downtown Austin
Hear us out. We know that many of you get stuck on these bridges on a daily basis (thanks, rush hour traffic). But, have you ever had the chance to cruise across Lake Austin while getting an up close look at the Downtown skyline, the clever graffiti on the pedestrian bridges, and thousands of bats soaring above? There’s nothing quite like it. Whether you’re a long time Austinite or a new transplant, this drive will swell your heart with pride for our one-of-a-kind city. Pro tip: avoid the commuters by making this a post-dinner excursion.

3800 Mount Bonnell Rd
You don’t have to climb up 102 stairs to experience the glory of Mount Bonnell. If you’re looking to soak in the views without breaking a sweat, try driving down Mount Bonnell Road and its surrounding neighborhoods. You’ll still get to see Austin from its highest point and snag the quintessential Austin sunset photo. Not to mention, you’ll get a glimpse of some of Austin's coolest real estate (that most of us can't afford).

Lake Travis Volente, TX 78641
This ride gives you all the magnificence of the Hill Country without having to stray too far from home. Head west on this road to drive alongside rolling hills and rivers. You’ll be led directly to Lake Travis where you can pull off for a dip at Windy Point or pick up some delicious Tex Mex at The Oasis. Either way, the drive only takes half an hour both ways, so you’ll be home just in time to binge a season of your new quarantine show.

Okay, so this one is by no means around Austin. In fact, it is a good 7 hours away. However, should you ever plan a trip out to West Texas (i.e. Big Bend National Park, Marfa, Terlingua) then you MUST include a drive on this highway for your itinerary. Known as one of the most scenic drives in the state, this Farm to Market runs parallel to the Rio Grande. With Mexico to your left, and the vast West Texas desert to your right, this wilderness route is something out of a John Wayne movie.
