If you have any affection for the Austin Music Hall, be sure to catch a show at the venue in the next few months. It will be apparently be your last chance, as the Austin Business Journal is reporting that the 43,000-square-foot music venue is set to be demolished to make way for a 28-story office building. Demolition will occur in the next few months, and construction of the new 349,000-square-foot building is scheduled to start in early 2016.
The Austin Music Hall was originally built in 1995, and renovated in 2006 and 2007 by Direct Events, who also owned two other former Austin venues — La Zona Rosa and The Backyard in Bee Cave. The entertainment company filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in 2013. The current owners, Cielo, will maintain ownership of the Austin Music Hall brand and, according to a written statement, look for a "smaller, higher quality music venue to open under the name."
Shows remaining on the concert calendar at the Austin Music Hall include Faith No More on July 26, Purity Ring on September 5, and two shows from My Morning Jacket on October 22 and 23. As of today no announcements have been made that suggest these shows will be moved to alternate venues. Find details and tickets below.
