After the heartbreaking closure of the Vulcan Video store off of South Congress last winter, local movie buffs, obscurity collectors, and VHS-fetishists alike have been feeling a VCR-sized hole in their hearts.
The building's sudden razing, and subsequent dearth of information left people wondering when, and if, they'd ever see an alternative to Vulcan Video's north location. As luck would have it, the venerated video store is set to open a new store in South Austin in the near future!
Vulcan Video recently leased a 4,400 square foot space at 4411 Russell Drive in the Southwood Shopping Center, off of Ben White Blvd. Vulcan Video has long been a beloved staple of Austin's penchant toward the more niche aspects of film culture, with an impressive array of rare media available for rent or buy. The store was even the subject of a commercial starring Matthew McConaughey and Jimmy Kimmel last year.
The opening date has yet to be announced, but the new Vulcan Video store is all but guaranteed to follow the same pattern of offering cult and foreign films, as well as other curiosities related to movies. In an age where video stores are a mostly antiquated concept, Vulcan Video is keeping both the nostalgia for a trip to pick up some movies, as well as knowledgeable and passionate staff alive.
If you're sick of watching reruns of That 70's Show and Fraiser, you can always get in touch with / stop by Vulcan Video and basically asked them to tell you what you should be watching. Like the true aficionados they are, their staff can recommended a number of interesting things from their vast selection of foreign, cult, and classic films. Stay tuned for updates at Vulcan Video on Facebook.
